Whether it’s your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, or Apple Watch, these gadgets carry high resale value and personal data that can be difficult—or even dangerous—to lose.
If you’ve ever had a device stolen (or know someone who has), you understand the headache that comes after. But the good news is that Apple builds in powerful tools to help protect you and your device. In this guide, we’ll share practical, everyday steps you can take to protect your Apple devices from theft—and give yourself some peace of mind.
1. Enable Find My iPhone (or iPad/Mac/Watch) Immediately
This should be your first line of defense. Apple’s Find My feature lets you track your device if it’s lost or stolen, and even remotely lock or erase it.
To turn it on:
- iPhone/iPad: Settings → Your Name → Find My → Turn on Find My iPhone and Send Last Location
- Mac: System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Find My Mac
Once it’s on, you can track the device from any other Apple product or via iCloud.com.
2. Always Use a Passcode or Password
It may sound basic, but too many people still leave their phones or Macs without strong passcodes. Set a 6-digit passcode on your iPhone or iPad, and use a secure password (with Touch ID or Face ID) for your Mac.
Why it matters: Even if a thief grabs your device, they’ll be locked out from accessing your data—or selling it easily.
3. Don’t Leave Devices Unattended in Public

Phones often slip out of pockets or get forgotten in Ubers and Bolts. Always double-check your seat before exiting. To be safer, turn on a feature like Notify When Left Behind via Find My, so you get a ping if you leave your device in an unusual place.
5. Set Up Activation Lock
Activation Lock is automatically enabled when you turn on Find My. It prevents anyone from reactivating your device without your Apple ID and password—even if they wipe it clean.
This drastically reduces the resale value of stolen Apple devices and discourages theft.
6. Engrave or Tag Your Device
Physically labeling your MacBook or iPad with your name or phone number (or using AirTag stickers or QR-code-based return tags) can discourage theft or help honest finders return your device.
For iPhones and iPads, you can also add your emergency contact info on the lock screen via the Health app’s Medical ID feature.
7. Consider Using an AirTag with Your Bag
Attach an AirTag to your laptop bag, backpack, or tech pouch. It’s a subtle but powerful way to keep track of your gear in real time.
In case your bag goes missing, the AirTag can help you locate it using the Find My network—even from far away.
8. Avoid Flashy Tech in High-Risk Areas
Sadly, some environments pose a higher risk for device theft—especially crowded markets, public buses, or nightlife zones. In such areas:
- Keep phones out of your hand unless needed.
- Use discreet or anti-theft bags.
- Avoid placing devices on public surfaces (e.g., restaurant tables).
9. Insure Your Device if Possible
While insurance doesn’t stop theft, it does soften the financial blow. Check if your Apple device is eligible for insurance through your bank, a local insurer, or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss (in supported regions).
10. Stay Vigilant—It’s Your Digital Life
Your Apple device is more than hardware. It holds your messages, memories, banking apps, business files, health data, and identity. Losing it can cause more than just inconvenience—it can expose you to fraud or digital loss.
