Five Things to Have Ready Before Setting Up Family Sharing
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
- Your Apple ID and password. The person setting up the family becomes the Family Organiser.
- Apple IDs for each family member.
- A payment method attached to the organiser’s Apple ID.
- Devices running iOS 16 or later or macOS Ventura or later.
- Ideally, have everyone nearby during setup to make accepting invitations easier.
Taking a few minutes to prepare these items will make the process much smoother.
Setting Up Family Sharing From Your iPhone — The Complete Process
Step 1: Open Settings
Tap the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap Your Name
At the very top of Settings, tap your name to open your Apple ID settings.
Step 3: Open Family Sharing
Tap Family Sharing.
If this is your first time, tap Set Up Family Sharing.
If you already have a family group and want to add someone new, tap Add Member.
Step 4: Follow Apple’s Setup Prompts
Apple will guide you through the available features, including:
- Purchase Sharing
- Subscription Sharing
- Location Sharing
- Screen Time
You can enable or disable any of these features now and adjust them later.
Step 5: Invite Family Members
You can invite people in two ways:
Option 1: Invite by Apple ID
Enter the person’s Apple ID email address.
They will receive an invitation on their device.
Option 2: Invite in Person
Choose Invite in Person and allow the family member to enter their Apple ID credentials directly on your device.
Step 6: Wait for Acceptance
Once they accept the invitation, they immediately become part of your Family Sharing group.
Creating an Apple ID for a Child
If your child doesn’t already have an Apple ID:
- Tap Create an Account for a Child
- Enter their correct date of birth
- Follow the prompts
Apple automatically applies age-appropriate settings and parental controls.
Important: The Family Organiser cannot be changed later without dissolving the family group and creating a new one. Choose the primary adult carefully before setup.
Adding Family Sharing From a Mac — For MacBook and iMac Owners
Many households prefer managing Family Sharing from a Mac.
Step 1
Open Apple Menu → System Settings
Step 2
Click your name in the sidebar.
Step 3
Select Family Sharing.

Click Set Up Family Sharing or Add Member.
Step 5

Common Family Sharing Issues — And How to Resolve Them
I Can’t See Shared Purchases
Verify that Purchase Sharing is enabled:
Settings → Your Name → Family Sharing → Purchase Sharing
Also confirm the family member has accepted their invitation.
A Family Member Didn’t Receive Their Invitation
Double-check the Apple ID email address.
If necessary, use the Invite in Person option.
Screen Time Isn’t Working
Ensure:
- The child is signed in with their own Apple ID
- Screen Time is enabled on the child’s account
Removing a Family Member
Go to:
Settings → Your Name → Family Sharing
Select the person and tap Remove from Family.
Can I Change the Family Organiser?
No.
The family group must be dissolved and recreated if you want a different organiser.
What Family Sharing Cannot Do — Managing Expectations
Family Sharing is powerful, but it does have limitations.
- You can belong to only one Family Sharing group at a time.
- A family group can contain a maximum of six members.
- The organiser must have a valid payment method.
- Some Apple services may have regional limitations.
